Writing a short story
Short story about my 20th birthday
The sun had long since set, replaced by lights that lit up the room. The night air felt cool, decorated with the cheerful laughter of children. That day was a very special day for me. This was my 20th birthday, exactly two decades of my breathing in this world.
Since childhood, the birthday tradition in my family has never changed: gathering with family. But this year, there was a different nuance. Twenty years. That number felt so big, so special. Moreover, with the presence of the little cousins—Lala who was a year younger than me, Afkar who was the most enthusiastic, Azrin who was always curious, Kenan who never stopped running around, and the youngest Kayla who was very talkative—this celebration felt even more lively and full of joy.
"Happy birthday!" shouted tiny voices almost simultaneously as soon as I appeared through the door, they all crowded around, I laughed, my heart warmed seeing those innocent faces. "Thank you, everyone!" I replied
In the middle of the table, a tart cake with candles number two and zero looked stunning, surrounded by plates of snacks and drinks. Mom and Dad looked on with proud smiles.
When it was time to sing the song "Happy Birthday~", the little voices of Afkar, Azzrin, Kenan, and Kayla were the loudest. They jumped around happily, as if the birthday was also theirs. I closed my eyes for a moment, absorbing every beat of happiness that night. Not only asking for wishes, but also absorbing the gratitude that overflowed in my heart. Gratitude for two colorful decades, for the boundless love from Mama, Papa and the whole family, especially the innocent laughter of my little cousins who are a reminder of the beauty of simplicity.
This warm and loving celebration is the foundation. Twenty years is not the end, but the beginning of a bigger adventure, with all the challenges and beauty that await. And I am ready to face it, with the blessing and love of my loved ones who are always by my side, including the little successors who are now busy fighting over the first piece of cake.
